MAITAKE: A SCIENTIFIC OVERVIEW

SCIENTIFIC NAME
Grifola frondosa

COMMON NAMES
Maitake is also known as hen of the woods, ram's head, sheep's head, and the Japanese name "dancing mushroom," which comes from its scientific name Maitake. They are also sometimes called the signorina mushroom in Italian American communities.

APPEARANCE
Maitake mushrooms have a soft, frilly, layered shape that looks a bit like a hen’s ruffled feathers. They grow in large clusters at the base of hardwood trees—especially oak—and are easy to spot thanks to their unique, fan-like appearance.

TRADITIONAL USE
Maitake mushrooms have been used for centuries in traditional Japanese and Chinese medicine as a daily tonic to support overall health, vitality, and longevity. They were highly valued for their ability to help strengthen the body and maintain balance..

BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS
Beta-Glucans: Natural polysaccharides that help support healthy immune function and have been studied for their potential anti-tumor benefits.

Ergosterol: A naturally occurring compound that acts as a precursor to vitamin D, supporting bone health and immune balance.

Triterpenes: Bioactive compounds known for their anti-inflammatory properties and potential to help support healthy cholesterol levels.

IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT
Maitake mushrooms contain bioactive compounds such as beta-glucans, particularly the protein-bound polysaccharide known as Maitake D-fraction, which has been shown to enhance immune function. Studies indicate that Maitake D-fraction can activate lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and T-helper cells, bolstering the body's defense mechanisms.

ANTI-CANCER POTENTIAL
Research suggests that Maitake mushrooms possess anti-tumor properties. Polysaccharide extracts from Maitake have been reported to inhibit tumor growth and enhance the effects of certain chemotherapy drugs. A phase I/II trial involving breast cancer survivors demonstrated that oral administration of Maitake medicinal mushroom extract over a 3-week period is safe and may have potential therapeutic effects.

BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION
Maitake mushrooms may aid in regulating blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that extracts from Maitake mushrooms can reduce blood glucose levels in animal models, suggesting potential benefits for individuals with diabetes.

ANTI-MICROBIAL PROPERTIES
Maitake mushrooms exhibit antimicrobial activity against various pathogens. Compounds derived from Maitake have demonstrated efficacy in fighting viral infections like hepatitis B, EV71, HSV-1, and HIV, as well as bacterial infections.

CHOLESTEROL MANAGEMENT
Consuming Maitake mushrooms may contribute to lowering cholesterol levels. Studies have indicated that Maitake extracts can reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, potentially supporting cardiovascular health.

HEALTH BENEFITS

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

  • Allergic Reactions: A small number of people may be sensitive to Maitake mushrooms. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, it’s best to stop use and consult a healthcare professional.
  • Drug Interactions: Maitake mushrooms may interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners and blood-sugar–lowering drugs. If you’re taking prescription medications, it’s a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before adding Maitake to your routine.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to talk with your healthcare provider before adding Maitake mushrooms to your routine.
